From the womb through adulthood, our body is going through a series of steps and developmental milestones, which occur alongside natural growth. Just like creeping (crawling with your belly on the ground) goes before crawling (on hands and knees), which happens before walking, our growth and development is made of “steps” that build upon each other. Typically, a child that creeps and then crawls, will walk and run with a greater level of coordination and balance.
That means better integration. For instance, the hands and feet have a better neural integration with the eyes. Natural processes that are not conscious like digestion, heart rate etc. are “connected” to this balance in our body.
Through childhood development, and mature aging – our bodies are in a continual process of change. Early childhood milestones along with normal developmental reflexes become the foundation upon which “adult or mature” tasks are able to be accomplished (like walking and talking on your cell phone at the same time). However, when a baby or young child is exposed to stressful environmental influences and/or trauma, one or more developmental reflexes may not mature properly, or will not function correctly.
Around the age of 3, we are acutely aware of our environment and have already made decisions regarding whether we are safe (physically, mentally, and emotionally). If our brain/nervous system has determined that we are in an unsafe environment it will use the limbic system (which is the subconscious brain) to develop coping strategies. We may be responding to non-traumatic signals in our environment as if they are dangerous – even if they aren’t.
Throughout our lives, these automatic responses may influence our day to day wellness.
Some people may have tension in their necks, jaws, head, and/or shoulders that are a response to “normal” signals in the environment.
Going through these different phases of development prime the body and nervous system to “work better.”

Once the limbic system has been activated in this way…
…it creates a foundational layer within our brain/nervous system that “misfires.” Over time it may result in a number of symptoms / issues / illnesses including:
- Pain in the neck, head, facial, jaw, shoulder
- Anxiety and racing mental thoughts
- Sleep disturbances (including insomnia, apnea, enuresis, and reflux)
- Negative patterns in communication and relationships
- Irrational fears and panic
- Self misperception or body image issues
- Unusual sensitivities (physical, mental, and emotional)
- Chronic pain
- Sensitivity to food textures, swallowing issues, food fetishes
- Addictions, and more…
Oro-facial growth and developmental reflexes are inextricably intertwined.
Think about newborn babies. What do they do to feel safe? What do they do to de-stress? They nurse…suck their thumb…coo. Action related to the mouth, lips, tongue. Think about this. Our tongue is moving in a pulsating fashion starting as early as 4 weeks of our uterine life! We swallow 1,500-2,000 times per day. The swallow is a pulsatile motion. It is unconscious and it usually “turns on” or stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system (the more relaxed part of the autonomic nervous system) and confirms relaxation and digestion. Relaxation and digestion go together. The SmileLase Technique recognizes that the orofacial zone is central to the body’s natural integrative and regulatory processes (which are crucial for developing health and wellness), and that nearly all of the critical maturational milestones are pre-verbal, involving touch and perception of body movement.
SmileLase uses a specific wavelength, intensity, and pulse shape, in an initial sequence of strokes, predominantly in the orofacial regions, to create unique, comfortable / pleasurable sensations that activate a primitive response that appears to release oxytocin. This opens a window into the subconscious brain to help it calm down, and resolve negative patterns related to trauma and stunted development. This then reduces and/or eliminates ‘Limbic Hypervigilance’ which appears to be a common component in chronic disease.
Now (after a SmileLase session), our brain is able to process new sensations, signals, etc., in a more physiologic context and the “old wiring” can function with more “ease,” decreased limbic hypervigilance, decreased tension, improved breathing and so on.

SmileLase is a technique developed by a “Master,” Darick Nordstrom, DDS. We have been working with Dr. Nordstrom for over 20 years. He is the creator of the Advanced Light Functional Appliance (ALF). Dr. Nordstrom began developing the SmileLase treatment about 6 years ago. It has now gained popularity in our Osteopathic/Dental (4 handed) community.
The SmileLase treatment is a PhotoBioModulation (PBM) technique; Photo-Light, Bio-Life, Modulation-influencing function or physiology. There is substantial scientific literature recognizing the health benefits of PBM. PBM has been shown to increase relaxation, decrease inflammation, increase ATP production (basically improving energy production in the cell and therefore improving health at the cellular level).
A Series of SmileLase is 3 Sessions
A Series of SmileLase is 3 Sessions
The Sessions
Plan on completing a series for optimal results. Each session lasts about 15-20 minutes. The sessions are typically performed 2 weeks apart (unless there are special circumstances – then they can be done more or less frequently). At this time we are performing the SmileLase treatment in our office. Please contact our office for availability. Dr. Moreno has treated over 100 patients with this modality. Our nurse is also trained in performing SmileLase.
Preparation
In preparation for your SmileLase treatment it is best to have NO caffeinated beverages at least 3 days prior to the procedure, and no caffeinated beverages for 24-48 hours post treatment.
Aftercare
After the SmileLase treatment it is recommended that no cold foods or drinks be consumed for 24 hours. Also, care should be taken if alcoholic beverages are consumed. Some patients have noticed an increase in sensitivity to alcohol and caffeinated beverages.
